Technology Risk Checklist for Growing Organisations.

Use this checklist to identify areas where technology risk, technical debt or unclear ownership may be limiting growth, increasing cost or creating security exposure.

1. Business Systems & Technical Debt

  • Critical systems are documented, owned and supported.
  • Legacy applications, duplicated tools and unsupported platforms are understood.
  • Technology costs and renewal risks are visible to leadership.
  • There is a prioritised plan for reducing technical debt.

2. Cyber Security Posture

  • MFA, access control and administrator permissions are enforced.
  • Endpoint protection, patching and device compliance are monitored.
  • Backups, recovery processes and incident response routes are tested.
  • Cyber Essentials or similar baseline controls are understood.

3. Microsoft 365 & Identity Security

  • Microsoft 365 licensing is understood and aligned to actual use.
  • Conditional Access, Defender, Intune and Purview capabilities are reviewed.
  • Joiners, movers and leavers processes are controlled.
  • Privileged accounts are protected and regularly reviewed.

4. Cloud & Infrastructure Maturity

  • Cloud services have clear ownership, cost control and governance.
  • Infrastructure risks, ageing servers and support dependencies are known.
  • Remote access, performance and scalability are fit for current needs.
  • There is a roadmap for modernisation and resilience.

5. Data Governance & AI Readiness

  • Sensitive data locations, access and retention rules are understood.
  • AI use cases are linked to business value, not just experimentation.
  • There are controls for acceptable use, data leakage and human review.
  • Leadership understands the risks before approving AI adoption.

6. Technology Ownership & Roadmap

  • Technology decisions are linked to business priorities.
  • There is a clear roadmap for security, cloud, workplace and systems improvement.
  • Risks are visible to senior stakeholders, not buried in technical teams.
  • Investment decisions are supported by evidence and options.

If you see several amber or red areas, it may be time for an independent assessment.

Mostly Green

Your current controls may be working, but periodic independent review can validate direction.

Several Amber Areas

There may be unclear ownership, unmanaged technical debt or security gaps that need prioritisation.

Any Red Areas

Leadership should consider a structured review before making further technology investment decisions.
